In 2013 more than 60% of Christmas decorations sold worldwide were manufactured in the Chinese town of Yiwu. Most of the work – assembling tinsel trees, sewing felt Santa hats, moulding plastic snowmen, spraying festive items with red powder – is done by hand in over 750 workshops and factories. Christmas goods are mainly made during summer. By the end of September the factories switch to Easter and Valentine's Day gifts, and then Halloween. Yiwu is also known for producing over three billion pairs of socks and as a market for counterfeit designer goods.
